There were many things that resulted from the treaty of tordesillas. Spain and Portugal basically got all of the land from the new world. This made other nations/empires angry. The British, French, and Dutch ignored this treaty and explored the new world anyway

They asked the pope(Alexander VI) and he decided that the world( the know world at the time) was to be split by an imaginary line. This line was a little bit west from the eastern tip of Brazil. Portugal got the eastern half of this line and Spain the western half.

Portugal gained control over part of Brazil, and then argued that the line was not fair so it was moved so that they got full control of Brazil.
The treaty divided newly discovered lands between Spain and Portugal avoiding a war between to two countries. Portugal was awarded all newly discovered land east of a meridian 370 leagues or 1364 miles west of Cape Verde islands, while Spain got everything west.
