When Queen Elizabeth I of England died, she left no heir as she had no children.

King James VI of Scotland was a distant relative of Elizabeth I, therefore he inherited the English throne, becoming King James I of England as well as King James VI of Scotland.

However James found it a huge burden and a massive headache constantly travelling back and forth between England and Scotland to rule them. So he proposed that both countries should be one United Kingdom.

At first the English and Scottish rejected this idea. So James gave himself the title of "King James of Great Britain", which officially united Scotland and England together into one united kingdom, hence the name, United Kingdom of Great Britain. King James then became King James I of Great Britain. He also passed a law called Act of Union 1707, which cemented the union between England and Scotland in British law.

James made England the head of the United Kingdom instead of his home country of Scotland because England was economically stronger than Scotland, had a larger army, a massively successful navy and had overseas colonies. Therefore making England the head of the union made Scotland stronger.
