Lack of interest is most commonly encountered by people with the medical condition Major Depression. This symptom, along with several others, may be used by your doctor to arrive at a diagnosis of Major Depressive Episode. This then should be treated with a combination of medication and counseling. Some other symptoms of major depression are: 1. Lack of pleasure in activities that used to be pleasurable (hobbies, etc.) 2. Disturbances in sleep (either increased or decreased) 3. Feelings of guilt about past perceived mistakes, or feelings of worthlessness 4. Lack of energy 5. Difficulty concentrating or holding a thought 6. Changes in appetite or eating habits (increased or decreased) 7. Feelings of hopelessness, especially having thoughts of hurting or killing yourself. If you feel any of these symptoms, you should see your doctor immediately. Depression is a medical as well as a psychological illness, and must be treated.
