The following needs to be considered when answering this question:

  • Not all countries have ever held or participated in a national population census.
  • Many countries are large and have poor infrastructures so collecting accurate census information is near impossible.
  • Countries don't all get together and decide to hold a census in the same year, this means that between census results the figures are approximate at best.
  • The birth and death rates are not constant in varying parts of Africa, so averaging census data between census years is difficult.
  • Migrant nature of many African people, moving between areas in search of work (as well as natural and man-made problems (famine, war).
  • The year in which the census was taken

In 2005 a survey showed that the continent of Africa was home to 922,011,000 people.

The Population Reference Bureau estimates the current African population as:

1,030,400,000 people (mid 2010)
