A full and complete census is called for by law every 10 years. One was just conducted in 2010, so the next full census is due to be conducted in 2020.However, in the intervening years, the Census Bureau still operates by talking smaller samplings of the population to address needs as directed by Congress and/or federal agencies.
The first census was held in 1790 and calculated 3,929,214 Americans. No year to year estimates were given until after the 1900 census, so the number is not known. However, the 1800 census calculated 5,308,483 Americans. So an educated guess for the population in 1793 would be about 4.3 million.
The most recent Census was held in 2006. The census scheduled for 2011 was not held because of the earthquake in Christchurch. The next census will be held on on Tuesday, 5 March 2013 instead. Normally the census is done every 5 years in NZ.
