Polygamy is illegal in the United States although it is still practiced by fundamentalist groups located mainly in the Western United States: Utah, Texas, South Dakota, Nevada, Montana, Colorado, Idaho, and of course Arizona. Since the practice is illegal and the groups do not always marry legally within their jurisdictions it is nearly impossible to obtain accurate statistics.

In some cases the men marry repeatedly and divorce their wives between each marriage so that each can be rightfully be called Mrs. They continue to all live together as a single family. Polygamy often involves child abuse of young girls forced to marry older men. That aspect has been used in recent prosecutions.

Utah is likely to have the highest number.
