You could use puzzled, stumped, confuzzled (puzzled/confused but note-it's not at actual word). That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Go check out a thesaurus. It'll help.
The other words can one use other than confused are deranged, confounded, blended, mixed, disordered etc.
Some alternative words to use instead of "he" include: they, it, the person, the individual, one.

You could use words like us, we, our, ourselves.
If one chooses to use figures instead of words in a sentence/paragraph one must be consistent. That is use ONLY figures or ONLY words and do not mix them both.
