I remember back in the late 40's that the Sears store at Milwaukee ave. Cicero. and Irving Park Blvd. in Chicago had a Grocery store down in the Basement of the building and it was a grocery Store type layout and it was called Hillmans. It was probably much like today's small food chains stores for all we had other than that was the Mom an Pop corner Grocery stores in each neighborhood. They had a Deli where you could get sliced lunch meats for this is how I remember my Mom buying an assortment of sandwich meats for her afternoon buffets when she hosted her Canasta gatherings. They carried a lot of items that were not available in neighborhood stores.
