What is figurative language
Language that goes beyond the ordinary meaning of words.
Figurative language is different from literal language in that the
former uses all kinds of techniques including metaphor, simile, and
so on to get its message across whilst the latter (literal) uses
straightforward factual language. Figurative speech is desirable
for novel writing because it is more interesting but literal is
more appropriate in an official document and in academic
writing.
Non-literal or figurative language refers to words, and groups
of words, that exaggerate or alter the usual meanings of the
component words.
What is a simile
A simile is when you compare the characteristics of two things by using like or as. You are saying that one thing has characteristics of another, although they may be dissimilar otherwise.
A simile is a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another of a different kind, as a description using the words like or as. (ex: like a rolling stone, as quick as a flash)
Other Examples:
- He is as sneaky as a fox.
- My mom and dad were acting like teenagers!
- She is like a beautiful flower starting to bloom.
- He ran across the desert, looking almost like a road runner.
