In 1521, while circumnavigating the world, Ferdinand Magellan would discover the Philippine Islands and claimed them for Spain. While he was in the Philippines, Magellan would become embroiled in local politics that eventually would see him cut down and killed in the beach surf attempting to reach his ship.
In 1565, the Spanish would return with Miguel López de Legazpi's expedition. Legazpi established the first Spanish city on the island of Cebu and named it San Miguel. The country would remain under Spanish dominion until 1898.
