Definition1/16
The Five Year Plans were the means by which Joseph Stalin
accomplished his economic goals. He had stated that the Soviet
Union was 50 to 100 years behind the industrialized west and that
they had to catch up within 10 years or be crushed. He did away
with Lenin's New Economic Policy and instituted the first Five Year
Plan, which had specific goals for increasing industrial and
agricultural capacity.
The goals of the first Five Year Plan were exceeded in only four
years. A second Five Year Plan was then put into place. Eventually
Stalin did turn the Soviet Union into an industrial power, but at
the cost of millions of lives.
