What is one way to limit college tuition costs

Pay attention to your schedule and requirements to make sure you are not taking classes that you do not need for your specific degree.

Apply for scholarships and grants. Be sure to fill out your FAFSA application as soon as it opens during your high school senior year. This can potentially be a big help. FAFSA opens in October every year. Grants through FAFSA are first come first serve, so it is important to be one of the first groups to apply.

Look for low level jobs in your field that have college reimbursement for taking classes related to advancing to higher positions. This sometimes means getting a lower level certification first. When I was in college, I got my nursing assistant certification. I got a job at the local hospital, and they helped pay part of my college tuition to advance in the nursing field. There are usually some limitations, like I had to make an A in the class for them to reimburse 100%, a B for them to reimburse 80%, and so on. They would not pay for a class that I failed at all. It was a good initiative to get in there and really try.

Compare costs of your nearby schools. Getting your early classes at a community college is usually a big money saver. Also, staying close to home means you can usually eliminate the need to stay in a dorm.

Ask the school about work programs. Many schools have this option. Instead of being paid, your time comes off of your tuition. This is more prominent at universities.

Spread out your search for tuition costs. As long as you stay in your own state, the costs will be lower than they are if you go out of state. Some of these schools have programs for low income, and even if you have to stay on campus, you might still be saving money.

Online classes are also a lower cost alternative to actual on campuses classes. These are a better option for classes that you are not struggling in. If it is a class that you know you are going to be behind the eight ball, you may benefit from having access to a professor.

As with all things educational, check accreditation, so that you know whether you can transfer credits and whether your degree will be worth anything. Some schools will accept your money and not tell you about employment limitations, like getting a degree in criminal justice without realizing that a felony will keep you out of the law enforcement field.
