In Lewis Carroll's book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the
Caterpillar tells Alice to repeat the poem You Are Old, Father
William, which she does. It begins, "'You are old, Father William,'
the young man said."
So, the young man, Alice and the Caterpillar all say 'You are
old father' in Alice in Wonderland.
`Repeat, "YOU ARE OLD, FATHER WILLIAM,"' said the
Caterpillar.
Alice folded her hands, and began:--
`You are old, Father William,' the young man said, `And your
hair has become very white; And yet you incessantly stand on your
head-- Do you think, at your age, it is right?'
In the 1951 Disney version, Tweedledum and Tweedledee begin to
repeat the poem, but Alice has heard enough poetry from them, so
she leaves.
