After pondering ideas for while in a closed room, I started meshing concepts and gameplay mechanics from classic MMOs together with the popular idle game formula, creating something that could be enjoyed in a casual way, while on the move and easily fit into the busy lives of players."
He adds: "While the numbers and statistics stuff isn't something that all players like about MMOs however, it's the thing that people who are devoted fans tend to stick to after exploring is over. Since it is often central to what long-term players' attention is It was natural to make this the primary element of Melvor's game's concept. Plus it meshes very well with the design elements that are common to most idle games."
Although he was influenced by other MMOs, the structure that was the basis of RuneScape was one he was particularly attentive to, laying its world Melvor Idle to create a universe that was akin to the 20-year-old RPG. "RuneScape became a key touchstone for the game because it was such a foundational gaming experience for me" says the game's creator."
Like many people I got into RuneScape because a lot of my friends was playing the game. Its being a browser-based game was a major factor in this. Its ease of entry combined with RuneScape's branching depth and complexity were the reason that made me want to return to it for a long time -- which is something I've always wanted to replicate using Melvor Idle."
With Malcolm quite transparent about his ideas the word quickly spread to Jagex that the fan had developed a game based upon its own MMO. Staff members reported it to the management team, with director of product management Chris Pfeiffer telling us his team was impressed with "how much was achieved and how much of it aligned the game's core values with RuneScape."
"The vision for Melvor Idle is in tune with our primary principles of what makes the game a living one -- it's therefore a perfect fit with us" He says. "Furthermore the idea of offering someone in our community this chance is a great motivator for everyone in the company."
Pfieffer and his fellow colleagues have Pfieffer and his colleagues tried Melvor Idle on their own and they were impressed enough that they reached out to Malcolm for a discussion about the possibilities of working with Malcolm in early 2021.
"From our first contact we found out that Brendan shares Jagex's philosophy of games with a community focus, and has done a fantastic job of fostering a healthy and active community in the area of Melvor Idle. It's rare to come across an obvious match when searching at publishing possibilities, but Brendan as well as Melvor Idle were exactly that, and so we took the chance to work with him and the game fully.
