Meningitis is an infection or inflammation of the meninges - the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. It may be bacterial, viral, or fungal and is SERIOUS and life threatening. It can cause brain and spinal cord damage and death. Meningitis is characterized by fever, vomiting, intense headache, and stiff neck. The classic sign is stiff neck (nuchal rigidity).
