In traditional Hawaiian healing, a foot massage is rarely just a "foot rub". It is approached as a way to unblock energy pathways (meridians) that affect the entire body.
The Two Core Variations
Lomi Lomi Foot Massage (Kapele / Wāwae): Focuses on the practitioner using their hands, thumbs, and forearms to perform long, wave-like, gliding strokes on the client's feet and lower legs. It incorporates joint mobilization of the toes and ankle to release trapped tension.
Kua Lua (Back Walking): Historically, therapists used their own bare feet to massage the client's entire body (including the back and legs). The therapist balances using ropes or wooden bars.
