Its mostly hereditary, passed on from parent to child. Please note a child can have ADHD even if the parents do not. On the other hand a parent can have ADHD and not pass it on to the child.

Physically ADHD is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain along with other factors.

As an adult with ADD, I participated in a long term study in the early 1990's. PET scans, MRI's CAT Scans, etc.

I was told that the main reason for TRUE ADD and ADHD was primarily a low blood flow to the pre-frontal cortex in the brain. This area is responsible for such items and scheduling, task priority, etc.

This low blood flow is helped by stimulants.

It makes it hard to focus, small attention span, can't do a task for to long, gets into trouble a lot but not on purpose all the times. Talkative, is very common effects of having ADHD and I say it because I have ADHD myself.
