Ask anyone suffering from neck pain and you'll hear that their pain is more than just a passing irritation. It can also cause related migraines, lower Back pain, shoulder pain, loss of sleep, and stress. That's a lot to cope with and it's easy to conclude that there's one thing that must be done - banish neck pain once and for all.

With that in mind, the first place to start is your pillow.

Here's why.

The vertebrae in your neck are neatly positioned on top of each other; however, there's a natural curve to your neck. If viewed through an x-ray you could easily see this natural curve. The more your neck maintains this natural curve, the happier it is.

Since we sleep about one third of our life, it makes sense that you address the pillow you are sleeping on. Large, fluffy pillows prop up our neck and tend to flatten that natural curve in the neck. This ends up stretching some of the neck muscles and contracting others. When this type of muscle activity is kept up for hours on end, it results in neck pain. Sleeping on a large, fluffy pillow would be equivalent to tensing your biceps muscle for hours on end. How long can you make it before pain is experienced? Not too long!
