A thyroid is a single gland with two lobes or halves. A live donation of half a thyroid gland or a cadaver donation of either half or whole thyroid gland is not currently done, although it may be possible. Physicians currently consider the thyroid to be a *disposable* gland not worth the health risk to the recipient. Thyroid hormones T4 and T3 are currently available as lab preparations or as whole dessicated thyroid in many dosages for patients who don't have a functioning thyroid or lack sufficient hormones to stay healthy.
