Damage to, or blocking of, your fallopian tubes does NOT mean you cannot get pregnant, provided your ovaries are still healthy. If so, many PCOS and Endometriosis patients would not have been able to conceive!
With IVF you are given hormones to stimulate the growth of several eggs at once (compared to the one or two your body usually ripes each cycle), which are then extracted directly from your ovaries and fertilised at a lab with your partner's (or donor's) semen. If one or more embryo's are formed, they choose the strongest and healthiest one(s) to transfer back into the mother's womb, hoping it will hatch there as any other fertilised egg would.
Contrary what is claimed in the above answer eggs are NOT fertilised in the fallopian tubes (usually not even test tubes, rather perti dishes!) and ectopic pregnancies (which often occur inside one's fallopian tubes) have NO connection to the process!
