Technically, if it would be ripped you would be able to talk because your larynx, which is your voice box (Adam's apple) is what you talk through. Your esophagus, you could think of it as a flap that covers either your breathing tube or eating tube one at a time. When you breathe, it makes sure to cover the eating tube, and when you eat it makes sure to cover your breathing tube to open up the right tube. That's why when some people choke on their food, they say "it went down the wrong pipe", because it actually did. You might have been talking while you were eating so the flap was covering your eating tube.

But if your esophagus is torn, then it would probably be hard to swallow, and probably even breathe, but it wouldn't directly affect your voice.
