Does phonics helps dyslexia?

Phonics alone does not help dyslexia. Dyslexic readers have difficulty changed the written word into spoken word because they struggle with basic auditory processing skills. Before you learn phonics you need to master these basic skills like phonemic awareness and fluency. Phonics builds on top of these skills and you can not understand phonics or learn to read well without them. There are a lot of programs that teach phonemic awareness and fluency before phonics. My favorite is Sound Reading Solutions which teaches these foundational building blocks and then moves on to cover more advanced skills like comprehension and phonics.

What is better hooked on phonics or baby can read?

I can not speak specifically to Baby Can Read but I do know that when teaching students how to read, phonics is not the best answer. Before a student can learn to read he or she must master phonemic awareness (the ability to hear all the sounds in a word). Once the child has developed an appropriate level of phonemic awareness, they will then be able to use phonics to improve their reading. Instead of using a program that starts with what a student doesn't know (the letters of phonics), you should start with what the student does know (the sounds he or she hears every day). Since I do not know much about Baby Can Read, I can not give you an informed recommendation on this topic. I suggest that you try a program that is not purely phonics first.

What is a phonics?

Phonics is a kind of instruction that focuses on the different sounds letters make. There are more than 44 different sounds in the English language and more than 1200 ways to spell them. It is taught by teaching students all these different sounds and spellings and then showing them how to blend them together to guess the pronunciation of words they do not know. Right now, phonics instruction is really popular with Programs like Hooked on Phonics and Fast Forward. However phonics instruction is still a controversial topic. Many students find it frustrating and ineffective. In my opinion, struggling readers and really anyone who is learning to read, needs to learn phonemic awareness first. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear all the different sounds in a word. If a reader can not hear the different sounds they will be unable to tell a long vowel from a short one or consonant blends or digraphs apart. Some programs teach phonemic awareness before phonics which allows students to build these basic auditory processing skills before trying to make sense of the 44 different sounds and the letters that go with them. My favorite all-encompassing reading program is Sound Reading Solutions (www.SoundReading.com). It comes in three levels that target different ages and abilities and is the best program I have found that teaches all the foundational skills essential to reading. They have a great page on their website that explains this in even more detail - http://soundreading.com/On-Phonics.html
