One Major factor leading to a change from the middle to modern age, was the fact that with over half the population wiped out from war and plague, Lords were left without laborers on their land. This meant that they had to do something never before practiced in Europe, paying Peasants for work. This changed the peasants quality of life and gave them the financial abilities to become tradesmen and merchants.
