the corpses of the deceased would usually be compiled into small ditches or very large holes to conceal the odor. the conditions during the plague made most of Europe uninhabitable as the fluids and gross odors of the deceased corpses would mix in with the main sources of clean water and causing sickness and death.

Beginning in Roman times people started to bury the dead when Christianity took hold, so by the middle ages burial was the preferred method. At times during plague events when there were thousands of dead some bodies were burned, but generally they were buried. This was true on battle fields as well.
