They work well unless you drink alcohol. Basically a liver cell filters out substances taht can be harmful to the body, but alcohol and a number of other less popular substances severely damage the abilities of the liver cells over time.

All i really know about liver cells is that there also called hepatocytes. LFTs or liver function tests can be used to assess the functioning of the liver cells. I guess that they receive oxygen via diffision.
