Most rashes caused by jewelry is, in fact, contact allergic dermatitis. Many people have contact Allergies to nickel or other cheap metals in costume jewelry.

The easiest way to get rid of the rash is to stop wearing the necklace. Ways to make the rash go away faster include a topical steroid cream (such as hydrocortisone, sold over the counter). If it itches, you can take diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or another over the counter antihistamine.

Note: Benadryl and many other over the counter antihistamines used for pruritis are sedating, and may cause you to be sleepy. Do not drive or operate any other vehicle if you are sedated from a medication.

If you have to wear the offending jewelry (for some reason), painting the jewelry with a clear nail polish can give you a short period of protection from the metal, and hence the allergen.
