"How do you help your children to overcome witnessing emotional abuse?" Immediately get out of the emotionally abusive relationship or situation. Take progressive steps to undo the damage caused by the exposure to emotional abuse. Seek professional counseling for yourself as the adult to get to the bottom of why you emotionally abuse or why you had your children in an emotionally abusive situation. Best Wishes... Hopefully, you have left the situation and the abuser no longer has access to the children. You can get some good counseling and EMDR (eye movement desensitizing and reprocessing). However, I think the best thing to go with that is to discuss with the children how you feel when certain things are said...and then to practice what you preach in how you and the children communicate with one another. It will be a relearning process and all of you will have to be vigilant to create a "safe home," that does not allow bullying and verbal abuse. It will take awhile to move beyond the experience, even so, but you can start some positive moves now.
