I have struggled with major depressive disorder for several years and have tried several different ways to explain what I was feeling at the time. One analogy that seems to work is to share the following scenerio: Imagine that you are lying on a couch and that you are completely weak and unable to move or get off the couch. Across the room is a wand (or something similar). You know that if you can get to the wand and grab it you will immediately be healed. However, it does not matter how hard you try to get off the couch, you absolutely cannot move. You are paralyzed and unable to do anything that might help you. I don't know if this helps, but it seems to have given some people around me an answer.

While there is a genetic component to depression, it is not directly inherited like physical traits. Having a family history of depression can increase the risk of developing it, but environmental factors and individual experiences also play a significant role in the development of the disorder. Therapy and other interventions can help manage and treat depression, regardless of its origins.
