The pancreas consists of both exocrene and endocrene tissue. Exocrene tissue secretes digestive enzymes into the duodenum to break down acids, carbohydrates, fats and proteins and bicarbonate to neutralaize stomach acid. Endocrene tissue secretes hormones glucagon and insulin, controlled by a third hormone (somatostatin) directly into the bloodstream to regulate blood sugar.
