I was at first wondering that myself but after some research, yes it is safe and recommended particularly if you are thinking of conceiving whether it be months or a year down the line because I believe the spine forms early on and folic acid is needed for this. Your body will not absorb any excess folic acid so you cannot overdose on it, however it is recommended not to take anymore than 1000mg. 5mg is recommended for people like myself on epilepsy medication or if there is a history of spina bifida in the family or previous offspring. Hope that helps. xx

If i do take Folic acid will i get pregnant easily?

Nope. Folic acid just helps prevent neural tube defects in the first few weeks of a growing embryo's life. It has nothing to do with fertility, however you should start taking at least 400mcg of folic acid per day as soon as you even start thinking about trying to become pregnant. Your body can't maintain levels of folic acid innately, so you have to take some every day to be sure your baby gets enough.

Is it bad to take folic acid at 4 weeks pregnant?

Taking folic acid at 4 weeks pregnant is not bad; in fact, it is highly recommended. Folic acid helps reduce the risk of neural tube defects in the developing fetus. It's advised that women trying to conceive or who are in the early stages of pregnancy take a daily supplement of folic acid, ideally beginning before conception and continuing through the first trimester. Always consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice.

How much folic acid to take?

It is recommended that most adults consume 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid per day. Pregnant women or women trying to conceive should aim for 600-800 mcg daily to prevent neural tube defects in the baby. It is always best to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen.

Why take folic acid?

Ideally, take folic acid if you are trying to conceive (in the form of a pre-natal vitamin). Folic acid makes the most difference (in my understanding) in the first trimester of pregnancy as that is when neural tube and brain development is most involved.

You should be taking 0.5mg of folate per day for three months before you fall pregnancy and for your entire pregnancy. Studies have shown that to be most effective you need to take this EVERY day, not just 6 days a week and hope for the best on the other day.
