Adults need a particular enzyme in their stomach to tolerate lactose. Babies are born with that enzyme. It turns off automatically in a number of children when they get to be about six years old. As a result they become lactose intolerant. Height and weight have nothing to do with lactose intolerance but the lack of an enzyme. Some people lactose intolerant people drink milk with a bacterium added which adds that enzyme. Others eat milk in the form of cheese or yogurt.
Lactose intolerance is diagnosed by a test of the baby's stools (poo) and a blood test. Signs that a baby may be lactose intolerant are the baby's stools are frothy and green in colour, the baby may pull their knees up to their tummy and be irritable and unsettled, or if the baby is breastfed the baby may be constantly on and off the breast but not gaining weight.
Greek yogurt offers intestinal benefits, decreases the effects of lactose intolerance, and while it's not proven, it is believed it has anti-cancer and weight-loss benefits.
