Are root canal fillings bad?

i need to have a tooth added on to my partial plate

How can you tell if a tooth has gone bad under a crown that has a root canal?

If a tooth has a root canal filling you will not be able to know because the main factors of a tooth that has gone bad is sensitive to hot and cold or tender when putting any pressure on the tooth but if it has a root canal it is slightly different because the nerve is removed so you cant feel it. The tooth if it has a root canal will always go dark as the tooth is dead but this does not mean it is bad. The main sign of a bad tooth that has had root canal is an abscess under the tooth so if you feel pain when lying down that is keeping you awake at night or when leaning forward it really hurts then you have an abscess and that tooth will most probably have to be re-root canalled by a specialist or extracted! :)

Should a root canal be performed if infected?

Yes! In fact, half of the time, its the root canal which clears away the infection as your dentist would usually file away the "bad" part of the tooth anyway.

Is smoke bad for a root canal?

Smoking has no effect on root canal therapy, or endodontic therapy.Previously a poster wrote that smoking had caused dry socket. Dry socket is a sequela to an extraction; smoking can adversely influence the healing status of the socket of an extracted tooth.

Should you use an antibiotic to get rid of bad taste in your mouth due to failed root canal?

Since a failed root canal may result in an infection, you should consult your dentist rather than trying to diagnose and treat yourself. Even if you do need an antibiotic, it matters which antibiotic you use, and some are available only by prescription. Furthermore, the failed root canal should be repaired.

Can a bad root canal procedure lead to potential health issues?

You got a bridge with two crowns a weeks ago and the pain is unbearable Dentist says you may need root canal now Is that normal and how do they do it without taking off bridge and crowns?

The need for a root canal after having a crown placed is not 'normal' per se, but it does happen often enough. When the decay on the tooth is removed, sometimes the nerve is damaged in the process. This does not mean the dentist did anything wrong. It simply means the decay was more extensive and closer to the nerve than was known. Fortunately, the crown or bridge does not have to be removed in order to perform a root canal procedure. The dentist can simply drill through the crown as if it were a natural tooth and place a silver or tooth colored filling when the root canal is completed. Now for the bad news: The root canal may fail. If this happens, you will lose the tooth and probably a major portion of the bridge as well. Before you have him perform the root canal, discuss what your options are if the root canal fails. Also make sure everyone understands what fees you will be refunded or office credits you will receive if the root canal fails. After all, you have forked out major bucks for the bridge already, you now have to pay for the root canal, and you may even get to pay for an extraction before it is over. IMO, you are entitled to at least a portion of the bridge fee as a refund in the event you lose the bridge. If the dentist is not willing to offer this compensation, I recommend you see an endodontist to have the root canal done. He's a specialist in root canals and your chances for success may be better with him. Granted, his fees may be higher, but if his procedure works, you will save the entire bridge.

Can a bad root canal cause jaw muscle atrophy?

Yes, a poorly performed root canal can potentially lead to complications that may contribute to jaw muscle atrophy. Infections or inflammation resulting from an unsuccessful procedure can affect the surrounding tissues, causing pain and limiting jaw movement. Prolonged pain or dysfunction may lead to disuse of the jaw muscles, ultimately resulting in atrophy. It's important to seek prompt dental care if complications arise after a root canal.
