Keratin, simply put, makes tissues hard. Think about a musician who plays a guitar or other instrument that is either plucked or strummed. They develop callouses on their finger tips or the sides of the fingers that do the primary plucking or strumming. Once upon a time -- a very dark time before data entry was primarily done on keyboards -- writers (this writer included) developed callouses on their index fingers under the side that the pen or pencil rested. Keratin is a very strong, naturally produced substance. But too much keratin can cause skin to become leathery and extre firm -- and not in a good sort of firm way.
