Houdini gave a lecture at McGill University. While he was there, he met an art student that showed him a sketch he had made of Houdini. Houdini invited the student to visit him backstage before his afternoon performance. The day after, the art student and two of his friends were talking with Houdini in his dressing room. One of the students' friends, who was an amateur boxer, asked if it was true that Houdini could withstand any blow to his body above his waist, but excluding the face. Houdini admitted it was true, and gave the student permission to test him. Before Houdini had time to tighten his abs, the boxer punched him 3 times in the stomach. Houdini fell into his chair. Even though Houdini was in pain, he performed his show in the afternoon.

He started getting really sick. When he was in Detroit, Michigan performing, he finally saw a doctor, who urged him to see a doctor immediately. Houdini refused, even though he had a temperature of 102 degrees. Instead, he went on to give his usual performance that night. After the show, he at last agreed to go to the hospital. Doctors operated and found taht his appendix had burst, causing peritonitis. He died on October 31, 1926.
