If it has been itching for some time, you may have thread worms or pin worms (or some other small parasites). These come out at night for a little fresh air (well, to lay eggs really) and this causes itching. It's easy to catch eggs under your fingernails that end up in your mouth and you infect yourself again. These are not really serious, just annoying. Medication can kill the worms but not the eggs, so you have to repeat the dose a couple of weeks later when the eggs hatch again. All the family have to be treated at the same time.

It's very common and natural and called Pruritus Ani. Too many people suggest it's because you need to clean more but they are wrong and actually that makes it worse if you clean too much.
