Simply speaking, this is a response of damage to cells in the area, so the tissues surrounding the damaged ones fill with tissue fluid and swell, this helps cushion and protect the area from further damage. The swelling may be tender and bruise.
Gently applying ice (covered with a towel) may help relieve swelling. If the swelling is on a leg, having it raised above hip level will help relieve swelling also.
