Aortic valve is an important and strong 'gate', so to speak for blood leaving the heart. Main reasons to replace this valve is aortic stenosis (door doesn't open well) or aortic insufficiency (door doesn't close well.) These conditions normally progress slowly.

Since the aorta is the main blood vessels for the body, when it's stenotic, you don't get enough blood to your vital organs, which is obviously not a good thing.

With Aortic insurficiency, the heart has to work harder because blood return from aorta back into the heart after every beat. Think 3 steps forward and 1-2 steps back everytime. Overtime, the heart with be 'exhausted' and this can lead to heart failure, which is also not a good thing.
