The most important hormone for gluconeogenesis is glucagon. It is released by the alpha cells of the pancreas in response to low blood glucose levels and works to stimulate the production of glucose from non-carbohydrate sources like amino acids and fats in the liver.

This happens in most cells except the brain. It also fosters glycogen storage in the muscle and liver and promotes lipogenesis mainly in adipose tissue and the liver. It has one last effect. That is to stimulate protein synthesis from amino acids entering cells and inhibit protein degradation, effecting growth.
