From consuming food or drinks contaminated with Cholera micro-organism (If a person gets cholera it means he has consumed microscopic amount of faeces from a person suffering from cholera!) If gangliosides were removed from the surface of target cells, cholera toxin would be unable to bind effectively to these cells. This would prevent the internalization of the toxin and its subsequent activation of adenylate cyclase, leading to a decrease in cAMP levels. Consequently, the disruption of ion transport and fluid secretion that characterizes cholera would be significantly diminished, likely reducing the severity of the disease. Overall, the absence of gangliosides would inhibit the pathogenic effects of cholera toxin.
If someone finds this answer it would be wonderful if they would share it. This is the exact question I need answered.
On the Oregon Trail, to cure Cholera they would give the infected person laudanum (an opium tincture useful in combating the disease). If the travelers didn't have laudanum, they would increase fluid and salt intake to prevent dehydration, and give the person lots of rest.
Yes, Cholera can be treated and cured. However there is no vaccination, so even if you are cured, you could catch it again. Cholera is treated by replacing fluids and electrolytes in your body which are lost by diarrhoea. See the related question below for more information.
