Both the upper and lower ends of the stomach have a sphincter that regulates flow into and out of the stomach. The lower esophageal sphincter is at the top of the stomach, and the pyloric sphincter is at the lower end of the stomach.
The lower middle region of the abdomen is the hypogastric region. Hypo means below, and gastric means stomach.
The esophagus is connected to the stomach through a muscular valve called the lower esophageal sphincter. This valve opens to allow food to pass from the esophagus into the stomach and then closes to prevent stomach contents from flowing back up into the esophagus.
