(BPD) Bronchopulmonary dysplasia, a chronic lung disease. Caused by (IRDS) Infant Respiratory Distress Syndrome, infection, or mechanical ventilation.
S/S: Stiff, obstructed lungs; hard to ventilate b/c of scarring of alveoli.
Goal: To replace damaged alveoli
Rx: Supplemental O2, baby will need increased nutritional support every few hours b/c this infant is woking extremely hard to breathe & therefore needs more calories to expend the energy, and also drug therapy like surfactant put into lungs. Often will be premature birth (less than 37 weeks gestational age) & these infants are high risk, and infection prone. B/c this infant was born so early, it can NOT produce surfactant in its lungs like full term babies can (b/c surfactant is produced in the last weeks of gestation & this infant did not get a chance to stay in the womb to produce it), so it will have to be submitted through entubation within 24-48 hrs of being born. Many of these babies will have chronic to severe respiratory problems for the remainder of their lives.
At 17 weeks gestation, a fetus is not developed enough to breathe on its own. The lungs are still in the early stages of development, and the ability to breathe independently typically doesn't occur until around 24 weeks or later. Premature babies born before this point often require significant medical support, including mechanical ventilation, to help them breathe.
Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a common respiratory disorder in neonates, especially premature babies. It is caused by immature lung development and lack of surfactant, resulting in breathing difficulties. Treatment may include oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation, and surfactant replacement therapy.
Wet lung, or neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS), occurs in premature infants due to insufficient surfactant in the lungs, leading to alveolar collapse and reduced gas exchange. This condition is commonly seen in infants born before 34 weeks of gestation, as their lungs are not fully developed. Symptoms include rapid breathing, grunting, and cyanosis. Treatment typically involves administering surfactant therapy and providing respiratory support, such as oxygen or mechanical ventilation.
Premature is an adjective.
The premature baby was slow to develop.
When using high heat epoxy resin in crafting projects, the best techniques include ensuring proper ventilation, wearing protective gear, following the manufacturer's instructions, mixing the resin and hardener thoroughly, working quickly to avoid premature curing, and using a heat gun to remove air bubbles.
'Premature' in Spanish is 'prematuro'.
