Hemachromatosis is a disorder where excessive amounts of iron are absorbed and stored. It is possible to have hemachromatosis and be anemic as well. Usually it is genetic and is far more common than many people realize. It causes such a variety of symptoms due to poisoning of the tissues in a variety of body organs that it is often overlooked as the primary cause. These include liver disease, Diabetes, Heart disease and disorders, Arthritis, hearing problems, diseases of the endocrine system, and general susceptibility to infection.

Treatment is usually by venesection, which is a nice name for blood letting modern-day style. Diagnosis is made by liver biopsy and blood tests. It is strongly recommended that all members of a family be tested if one is diagnosed with the disease; it is extremely likely that some others will have inherited it. With treatment, it is entirely possible to avoid the complications it causes if detected prior to much damage being done. Even so, treatment will prevent further damage being caused.
