I had my tonsils out when I was eight years old. You dont feel anything in the surgery because they put you to sleep. When you wake up it does hurt when you swallow and your throat is going to be sore for awhile. But you can eat ice cream afterwards. You might throwup afterwards, I did because of the stuff they gave me to put me asleep.

Before you go to the operating theatre, an anaesthetist will come and see you and listen to your chest and ask about your health. He will prescribe a pre-med, which will make you feel sleepy and will dry up your mouth.

You will go to theatre and you will be put under anaesthetic, usually by a small injection into your vein. When the anesthetist is satisfied that you are properly asleep, he will tell the surgeon that it is OK to go ahead with the surgery. The anaesthetist keeps a check on your blood pressure and heart rate while the surgeon is operating.

After they are finished, you will be wheeled into a Recovery Room, where you will be looked after by qualified staff until you come round. They will keep checking your pulse and vital signs. When they are satisfied with your condition, either the surgeon or the anaesthetist will check your condition and sign you out of theatre. You won't usually remember this part. You will usually think you woke up back in the ward.

Yes, it does hurt for a few days afterwards. But you will be given a prescription for pain relieving medication, and they are pretty good these days, so it shouldn't be too bad. You may be surprised at how much your general health improves after the surgery, and that improvement makes it worthwhile.

I wish you all the best.

Can you get the mumps if your tonsils were removed?

Well I had my tonsils burnt out in hospital and the doctor said I can't get tonsilitus again because I don't have tonsils! (If you're going to get your tonsils taken out any time in the future, get them out now because adult tonsilitus is one of the worst pains you can have. You'll cry 24/7 wishing it didn't hurt and every hour you take tons of medicine. The worst bit is you don't get to have as much ice cream as you want like the old days. :'( Now you have to have rough, hard things e.g. crisps. Also I didn't mean to get carried away or scare you.)

Do your tonsils make you sick?

No everybody has tonsils. But if they get infected then you're sick. I had my tonsils taken out because they were infected not everyone gets infected tonsils but its better if you get tonsilitus (infected tonsils) when you're a kid because its more dangerous to get then surgically removed when you're older.

The Adenoids are near the tonsils. They are both part of the lymphatic system. They assist the body in fighting off disease and infections. In children, they are sometimes removed if they become enlarged and sore too often, just like the tonsils.
