Normal blood pressure is a reading under 120/80 Anything over that and you have:

Pre-hypertension which is when you have a reading between this and 140/90

High blood pressure is anything over this. (i.e. if the diastolic is over 90 OR the systolic is over 140 - or both - then you are diagnosed with hypertension.)

The diagnosis is not made on one reading alone as blood pressure fluctuates. It is best to have a number of readings (an good automatic home monitor will give good results) to give you an idea of how your pressure behaves and what level it is at for most of the time.

These levels have been chosen from research studies that have looked at levels of complications (like stroke or Heart disease) with different levels of blood pressure in large populations. Therefore 120/80 represents a level chosen because overall, people under this level have far less complications. You do not want to be higher, but if your blood pressure is lower, (say 110/70) then it is even better. In fact the lower the better as long as it doesnt go so low as to give you symptoms. Some people exist happily with a BP of 90/60 for example, others whose 'normal' level is higher would get symptoms at this level.

Finally, the target blood pressures are lower for people who have other cardiovascular risk factors. So for example if you have Diabetes the level at which you would consider yourself as hypertensive is 135/85.

Is blood pressure 170 over 115 during an exercise stress test normal for a 48 yr old woman with a heart rate at 140 beats per minute?

Your blood pressure is fine but your heart rate is a little high so you should ask your doctor about that. I know that a normal resting heart rate runs between 55 to 60 bpm. But you might want to talk to your doctor about and ask why you have a normal blood pressure but a seemingly high heart rate.

What is cardiovagal baroreflex?

The cardiovagal baroreflex is a mechanism in the body that helps regulate blood pressure by adjusting heart rate in response to changes in blood pressure. When blood pressure decreases, the baroreflex stimulates the vagus nerve to slow the heart rate, helping to raise blood pressure back to normal levels.

How does the body maintain normal blood pressure using a negative feedback mechanism?

The body maintains normal blood pressure through a negative feedback mechanism involving baroreceptors, which detect changes in blood pressure and send signals to the brain. When blood pressure rises, the brain activates pathways that lead to vasodilation and decreased heart rate, lowering blood pressure. Conversely, if blood pressure drops, the brain triggers vasoconstriction and an increase in heart rate to raise it back to normal levels. This continuous feedback loop ensures blood pressure remains within a healthy range.

What is normal blood pressure for 57 year old male?

I am not a doctor but since the normal systolic and diastolic blood pressure rate is 120 over 80 for a healthy adult, your blood pressure is within range. Exercise can also help maintain a healthy blood pressure rate. As you get older you should exercise more. Exercising helps the blood flow which can maintain healthy rates.
