We do not feel the weight of the atmosphere pressing down on us because our bodies are used to the constant pressure from the air around us. Our internal pressure matches the external pressure, so we don't perceive it as a sensation of weight.
The nerve for the thumb, called the median nerve, provides sensation and controls movement in the thumb. It carries signals from the brain to the muscles in the thumb, allowing us to feel and move it. Damage to this nerve can result in numbness, weakness, or loss of function in the thumb.
Capsaicin is the organic compound responsible for the burning sensation when we bite a chili. It activates pain receptors in the mouth, giving us the spicy sensation.
Sensation is the process by which our senses gather information and send it to the brain.
