The hilar nods are a space in the chest near the mediastinum (central chest containing heart and lungs). When these areas are calcified - usually it is due to scarring or tissue left over from previous infections. This is not a cause for much concern.

Other than defining the terms, I can't think of any alternative phrasing for this. It's certainly not as simple as "Oh, that's just doctor-speak for a tummyache" or anything.

I'll assume you understood "calcified" (stony) and "lymph node" (part of your lymphatic system). If not, then you're going to have a real hard time with the rest of this.

So, where are the hilar regions? The hilum is a region in an organ where blood vessels and nerves enter the organ. Specific organs the word is associated with are the liverl, spleen, kidneys and lungs, all of which have a sort of main "attachment point" to the circulatory system, and it's that area that's being referred to.

The "bilaterally" part means "on both sides" and rules out the spleen and liver, which are more or less on the left and right side of the body (respectively) only. That leaves as possibilities the kidneys and lungs ... but there really aren't any lymph nodes associated with the kidneys.

So what this means is: there are deposits in or hardening of the lymph nodes near where the pulmonary vessels enter the lungs. This is just a statement of fact, not an actual diagnosis; it's a piece of evidence your physician will use in coming up with the diagnosis, and that's really something you should be discussing with him or her, since several different conditions might cause this.
