They are composed of 2 or 3 leaflets, each with a fibrous core that is continuous with the annuli fibrosi (fibrous rings of the heart that surround the openings of the heart and serve as attachment sites for cardiac muscle as well as the bicuspid and tricuspid valves)of the cardiac skeleton. They are covered on both sides by fibrocartilage and a thin epithelium. Cordae Tendineae connect each leaflet of the atrioventricular valves (mitral + tricuspid) to the muscular projections (papillae) from the wall of the ventricle and prevent them from prolapsing into the atrial chamber during ventricular contraction.

Does paint fumes cause any damage to an aortic valve replacement patient?

Paint fumes (depending on what kind) can cause damage to any human. Its often a good idea to refrain from breathing in paint fumes whether or not you have an aortic valve replacement. Paint fumes when inhaled can cause damage to and kill brain cells (which you have a limited supply of).

What are conditions to look out for after you have your bicuspid aorta valve replaced and also root replaced and ascending aorta due to 6.4 aneurysm?

Let me start by saying this is something that you should discuss with the surgeon that did your operation and your cardiologist. I am writing as a current patient awaiting my own valve/root/ascending aorta replacement for a mere 4.7 cm aneurysm, and as a former paramedic, and current nursing student. I am not a licensed medical professional. Bicuspid aortic valve is a birth defect affecting an estimated 1-2% of the population. exact numbers are not known because it usually has no ill effects or symptoms of any kind. Unfortunately it is associated with a weakness in the walls of the ascending aorta. According to my surgeon, Dr. D. Craig Miller at Stanford University, during my last visit with him, the descending aorta is not part of the problem in bicuspid aortic valve. So you shouldn't have to worry about the rest of the aorta any more than any other person. You have not said what you had your valve replaced with. If it was with any biological valve (human, cow, pig, etc.) you need to worry about wear and tear. Talk to your cardiologist about how often and how (usually echo cardiogram) to get this checked. If you now have a mechanical valve, it will outlive you, but you are on blood thinners (coumadin/warfarin) and you need to monitor the level of drug in your body and watch what you eat (dark green veggies in particular can counter the effects of your medication) in order to keep your clotting factors in line. There are home monitoring devices much like the ones diabetics use to monitor sugar that can be used for that. As with any surgery, you need to be aware of complications that can occur as you are healing. This is something you need to talk to your surgeon about if you haven't already. If you are asking questions of Wiki, you may need to make an appointment with him or her and keep a list of questions to ask with you so you can write them down as you think about them. Otherwise, your concerns should be the same as any other person's: general good health and happiness.
