It reaches from the foramen magnum of the skull (the very base of the skull) to the level of the first or second lumbar vertebrae which is about the same level as just below the ribs.
Spinal cord infarction means that there was some damage to the spinal cord, or the blood supply to the spinal cord, which caused cell death there. Depending on severity and level, this could result in paralysis for the patient.

In an adult the lower end of the spinal cord usually ends at approximately the first lumbar vertebra, where it divides into many individual nerve roots (L1). That is the reason Lumbar Puncture usually perform at L3-L4 in order to prevent accidentally injure to the spinal cord. The point where the spinal cord ends is referred to as the "conus medullaris"
Tethered Spinal Cord is a condition where the spinal cord is attached to the spinal column and that causes the cord to become stretched.
