When the body is hot, nerve receptors in the skin pick up the message and send it to the brain. The brain in turn causes the release of hormones that causes a slightly saline fluid in the form of sweat to appear on the skin surface. As the sweat evaporates, it has a cooling effect on the body. If the body is cold, the skin picks up the message and sends it to the brain. The brain then sends a signal to the little hairs on the surface of the skin to stand up. The hair standing up on the skin traps air and keeps warm air near the body. Another way the body maintains body temperature when cold is to cause shivers. Involuntary muscle contractions or shivers cause heat by the effect of metabolic and muscular activity. When a person is sick and has a fever, the thermostat is rewired to a new temperature to help fight off the infection but many times fever reducers such as Tylenol or Motrin help bring the temperature down by blocking receptors that change the body's temperature.
