The latest studies estimate about one in every 200 teens harm themselves by cutting. This is a serious problem, and indicates some deep emotional trouble with the teen. You need to seek professional help for a teen at once if they are cutting themselves. Most teens who do this come from an abusive background, often with Alcoholism in the picture somewhere.

This is not something that they will "grow out of" - people continue to injure themselves even after they get out of the abusive situation and move out on their own!
