The latest studies estimate about one in every 200 teens harm themselves by cutting. This is a serious problem, and indicates some deep emotional trouble with the teen. You need to seek professional help for a teen at once if they are cutting themselves. Most teens who do this come from an abusive background, often with Alcoholism in the picture somewhere.
This is not something that they will "grow out of" - people continue to injure themselves even after they get out of the abusive situation and move out on their own!

In my opinion cutting is a choice to do if u are emo.But the percentage that really do cut,cut so they can feel as though they are in self control. Some emos feel as though their parents control everything they do and choose to cut.
Teenagers want to be liked by other teens. They expect themselves to be normal..at the same time unique in their own way.
As a rule, they don't. They follow what is cool or what their friends like. A small percentage of the population start thinking for themselves in their 20's.. some more 30's and some never at all.
